About Me

About ChrisHi everyone, I’m Chris, the owner and creator of A Helping Hand for English Learners.

I want to take a few minutes to tell you a little bit about myself.  I was born in Uruguay which is a Spanish speaking country in South America.  At the age of 10, my parents immigrated to Canada and that’s where I grew up.

When I first arrived in Canada I spoke no English, just Spanish.  In school (luckily or unluckily) I was the only Spanish speaker so even though that presented many challenges, it also enabled me to learn the language quickly and well, and to acquire good pronunciation to be able to speak without an accent.

You see back when I was growing up, that was very important.  It was thought that in order to really learn English you had to sound like a “native English speaker” with perfect pronunciation and no trace of the accent typical of your first language.

Nowadays things have changed somewhat and it has been agreed upon by many experts that since there is no “one” accent for all English native speakers, it’s okay to keep your own accent when you speak the language.  If we think about it native English speakers don’t all sound the same, do they?  Each country has its own distinct accent.  In fact, even within the same country people sound differently depending on where they live.

So, those were my formative years.  As an adult, I have had many different jobs both in Canada and here in Uruguay.  For reasons, I won’t go into right now, about 20 years ago I decided to move to Uruguay permanently. Here, I live with my beautiful 19-year-old daughter near my mom and my brother.

For the last 8 years, I have been teaching English to Spanish speakers on a part-time basis.

I’ve taught from teens to senior citizens, from beginning to advanced levels as well as conversation classes.  All of my experiences with both learning and teaching have given me some insight into the plight of the English learner.

I love helping people to learn the language and I’m here to try to help you as well.  If you have any questions or concerns feel free to post them in the comment area of this site and I will do my very best to answer them and help you clear up any concerns you may have.
